Corner Coffee University Module 6:

Teaching students with developmental and intellectual disabilities how to manage their time effectively, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced food service environment requires a structured approach.

Here are fifteen steps to help them develop these skills:

  1. Assess current time management skills: Evaluate the student’s current understanding of time management and their ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Identify areas for improvement and set realistic goals accordingly.
  2. Introduce the concept of time: Teach the student how to read and understand analog and digital clocks. Use visual aids, such as timers or schedules, to help them grasp the concept of time and its relation to tasks and deadlines.
  3. Create a visual schedule: Develop a visual schedule that outlines the student’s daily tasks and responsibilities. Include specific time slots for each task to provide a clear understanding of how time should be allocated.
  4. Teach task prioritization: Explain the importance of prioritizing tasks based on urgency and importance. Use visual aids, such as a task list with color-coding or numbers, to help the student understand and rank tasks accordingly.
  5. Break tasks into manageable steps: Break down complex tasks into smaller, manageable steps. Teach the student how to identify the individual steps required to complete a task and how to allocate time for each step.
  6. Teach estimation and time allocation: Help the student develop the ability to estimate how much time each task will take. Teach them how to allocate appropriate amounts of time for each task, considering factors like complexity and importance.
  7. Utilize timers and alarms: Introduce the use of timers or alarms to help the student manage their time effectively. Teach them how to set reminders and alerts to stay on track and meet deadlines.
  8. Practice time-tracking: Engage the student in activities that involve tracking time, such as timing how long it takes to complete specific tasks or estimating time intervals. This practice will help them develop a sense of time and improve their time management skills.
  9. Set realistic deadlines: Establish realistic deadlines for tasks and assignments. Work with the student to set achievable goals within a specific time frame, gradually increasing the complexity and time sensitivity of tasks as their skills develop.
  10. Offer guided practice: Initially, provide direct supervision and support as the student manages their time, prioritizes tasks, and meets deadlines. Offer guidance and feedback to help them develop effective strategies and overcome challenges.
  11. Use visual reminders: Utilize visual reminders, such as sticky notes or checklists, to help the student remember deadlines and prioritize tasks. These visual aids serve as cues and prompts for task management.
  12. Provide structured routines: Establish a structured routine that incorporates regular work periods and breaks. Teach the student how to manage their time effectively within this routine, balancing productivity with rest and relaxation.
  13. Teach flexibility and adaptability: Emphasize the importance of being flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced food service environment. Teach the student how to adjust their plans and priorities when unexpected situations or changes arise.
  14. Use role-playing and simulations: Engage the student in role-playing scenarios or simulations that mimic real-life fast-paced environments. This practice allows them to experience time pressure and develop strategies to manage tasks efficiently.
  15. Reinforce positive time management behaviors: Praise the student for their efforts and accomplishments in managing their time effectively, prioritizing tasks, and meeting deadlines. Provide positive reinforcement to motivate them and strengthen their time management skills.
